What does Add page numbers do?
Add page numbers draws a visual number layer onto one PDF in the browser. You choose one of nine positions, a start number, a number format, a sans, serif or monospace font, and whether to skip the first page. Source page content and page order are kept. A number may overlap existing content. Generated numbers and labels use a built-in Latin font. One PDF is accepted per task.
How to use Add page numbers

Open Add page numbers and select a single PDF. Unlock protected files first.
- 2Set position, start number and format
Pick one of nine positions, the start number, the number format, and a sans, serif or monospace font. Optionally skip the first page for a cover.
- 3Preview, then apply locally
The numbers are a new visual text layer. They do not replace printed numbers already in the page artwork.
- 4Download and check overlaps
Open the file and look at headers, footers and binding edges. If a number covers text, choose another of the nine positions and run again from the source.

Clear space where a number overlaps existing content is no longer readable. Existing printed numbers in the artwork are not deleted.
When not to use this tool
Do not use Add page numbers to rebuild Bates numbering for a legal hold, to add CJK glyphs the built-in Latin font cannot draw, or to change the physical page order — that is Organize PDF.
If processing fails
Encrypted files must be unlocked first. If numbers look like boxes, the built-in Latin font cannot draw that glyph — keep ASCII numbers. If you skipped the first page by mistake, run again from the source with that option off.
Privacy boundary
The PDF is numbered in this browser. It is not sent to a PDF Smart Kit application server. Close the page to clear the file from memory.
